A few new paintings sent off to Gallery Russia for the winter.

"Kasia's Bluebells" I worked on this one for my video demonstration. Which by the way I am still working on. So sad that its taking a while to finish up.

"Mama's little girl" I really enjoyed painting this one. Love the dark/light pattern and color harmony.

"Bearded Man" This one was done in an open studio session. I think one of the funnest things to paint is men with beards. The contract of very dynamic and bold features along with the soft flowing edges of the beard, just works. One of my favorites for sure.

Painting and Golf, the similarities are astounding

You may think I am reading much more then I am painting because of these book posts but believe me I am painting. I squeeze in the books just before going to bed. So hear is another one I highly recommend.

Golfs Sacred Journey ( seven days in Utopia) You may or may not have heard that they have recently come out with a movie about this book. It was hearing about the movie that inspired me writing about the book. I purchased this book some time ago for my Husband ( then fiance) for his birthday. He loves golf and is very good at it. He began teaching me golf when we were just dating, I remember him telling me how it is so much a mind game, how much you have to stay focused. Even then I saw parallels to painting but it wasn't until I read this book that I was convinced. In a nutshell this book is about a professional golfer who on a very important tournament pretty much failed miserable, from one bad shot it snowballed to a complete disaster, his nerves, emotion, mind got the best of him. He leaves the course ready to quit golf and drives out in the country stumbling upon a make shift golf course owned by an old man who was once himself a professional golfer. This is Utopia and the old man, Johnnie, becomes his teacher, counselor, mentor for seven days in Utopia as he learns about vision, confidence, focus, emotions, and trust. He is stripped down, broken and humbled as he is faced with his fears, doubts, pride and failures. Early in the book the young golfer recognized that he had traded Unconditional love for the love of his pet dog and the conditional love of his performance on the golf course. His life was out of control. In the book, his teacher, Johnnie gives him lessons each day in a most unconventional way, the lessons are not only about Golf but about life. There are lessons about Conviction, Faith, Emotional control, Vision, Truth, Trust and many others.

I just found it so interesting, maybe because I am a painter that I apply everything to painting, but I do believe there are parallels in the emotional control, the trust, the conviction of what I am doing as I paint and to not let a random response from a viewer throw me off of my game. Of course as a painter I found Chapter 5 the most exciting to read because the mentor Johnnie actually uses painting to help teach the young man a lesson in golf. In this lesson he introduced the acronym S.F.T See it, Feel it, Trust it to help him get his game back. "We must paint the shot with our eyes first, before our body can produce it accurately.." As painters we too need to first see the finished painting in our mind before we can reproduce it with our hands.

Though the book is about Golf and for me I see the parallel of playing golf and painting, there is a much deeper thing going on in this book, and that is the state of this professional golfer's soul. Early on in the book this young man recognized that he had traded unconditional love for the love of his pet dog and the conditional love of his performance on the golf course. His life was out of control. By the end of the book Johnnie is able to speak truth into his life "you have been controlled by your performance in life and the opinions of other. You have lost sight of what it means to live a life of significance. You see, success is a destination while significance is an eternal calling. " Amen to that.

Step 1. I blocked in an abstract color wash.

Step 2. I began to add thick layers of paint, leaving some of the original color wash showing through.

Step 3. In this stage I begin to focus in on areas to finish.

Art & Fear part 2

Just finished the book Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. Great read for sure and I highly recommend picking up your own copy. I doubt it will be a book you read and put back on your shelf never to be read again. I underlined way too many things to never find it useful again. It is weird to read a book and feel as if the writer is looking within you and saying exactly what is going on inside. I laughed out loud several times because I was reading about myself, about the exact things that go on inside me and it was describing my very actions. The writers got a lot of things right on, and I must say it was quit comforting to realize that I am not the only one to have doubts and fears in my work. One of the main points of the book was attempting to answer the question as to why so many artists quit making art. It was scary to see some of the reasons stemming from fear yet it also turned the heat up for me to keep pressing on, to not give way to fear and work hard despite my cycles of drought.

Just a few quotes from the book.

"All that you do will inevitably be flavored with uncertainty- uncertainty about what you have to say, about whether the materials are right, about whether the pieces should be long or short, indeed about whether you'll ever be satisfied with anything you make." pg 19

"The truth is that the piece of art which seems so profoundly right in its finished state may earlier have been only inches or seconds away from total collapse." pg 19

"Artists get better by sharpening their skills or by acquiring new ones; they get better by learning to work. and by learning from their work. They commit themselves to the work of their heart, and act upon that commitment." pg 28

"If you think good work is somehow synonymous with perfect work, you are headed for big trouble." pg 29

Art & Fear: part 1

I recently heard about this book while I was at the OPA conference in Coer DeAlane. The title intrigued me as I often find the issue of fear creeping in myself when I'm beginning a new work or suffering in what I call my artist funk. I've also found myself talking to my students about their fears while trying to learn. Fear is an issue for all of us as human beings but it is apparent that it impacts us as artists far to powerfully and consistently in our creative journey. Fear gets in our way, keeping us stagnant and often even pulling us down. It keeps us from pressing forward and taking risks, experimenting, trying new things. Fear lies to us, seducing us to be content in where we are, that its too risky to take that next step forward, that nothing good can come from it and in fact, certain failure is imminent. Fear, my arch enemy will not get the best of me. By the strength that comes from above I will have victory.

So I decided to order this book "Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils ( and Rewards) of Artmaking" by David Bayles. I have only read through the introduction, it is not a long book but I don't think it is one of those books you can just speed through and check it off your list. A slow read with lots of underlining seems necessary. I am curious as to what the author has to say about faith, the opposite of fear, playing an important roll in the creative journey, we shall see.

We had sessions on basics of drawing, painting with watercolor and acrylic, mural painting and some more crafty projects like painting rocks ( the kids loved that one) Looking forward to next years more in depth 5 day camp.

Giving Back

I came across an old post of mine from some time ago and wanted to share it again as I find my self in this place of gratitude once again.

What can you give a person who has given you so much. How can you ever repay someone who has offered and shared so much.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. As an art student I've found myself having next to nothing at times, trying to get a good art education, trying to have time to paint and draw, needing money to eat and sleep and stay alive. The old cliche the "Starving Artists" has not been too far from the truth. However, I found myself in the tutalidge of some very generous artists/instructors who have made and continue to make this journey a little easier.

One instructor in particular, teaching so generously, the tools of a good painter. They were like little jewels, treasures that I now see how valuable they really are. So I thought, How in the world can I ever give back, how can I repay such a person who gave and continues to give without really getting much in return. I realized that the only thing I can give back is to be the best painter I can be. To work hard, to show that all that effort did not go in vain. So the journey continues and I paint, pressing on, taking every opportunity to learn more and grow, and to pass on these jewels to others so that they might also share in this treasure.

As a thought about this further what became so obvious to me was that this is exactly what my Father in Heaven has given me. He has given me His Son, who died on the cross for my sins so that I can be with Him in heaven for all eternity. There is no way I could ever give back in equality for that. There is nothing on this earth that could match this Grace. So all that is left for me to do is to become more of who God created me to be, to be more like Him, to know Him more, to hunger and thirst after righteousness, out of thanksgiving giving him the glory and sharing the good news to others.

So I press on towards the finish line, that I might hear "Well done my good and faithful servant"

OPA National show Weekend

This afternoon I arrived in Coeur d'Alane, ID for the Oil Painters of America's National show weekend. I am so excited, this is going to be a great event. I have never been to the North West and the scenery here is amazing. I will post pictures of the event beginning tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting some new artists and catching up with long time friends. One of the highlights of this weekend will be the Demonstration by Scott Christensen on Friday morning.

I took a drawing workshop from Bo Zhang a few weeks ago. Below is a quick sketch and final 3 hour drawing from the first day of the workshop. There is something so beautiful in a simple charcoal drawing. To not have to think about color, temperature, paint application .. etc, can sometimes be so freeing and energizing. What a treat to get back to the basics and be reminded of some of the foundational and powerful aspects of art.

I will be trekking out on a three week painting trip in Southwest China. This trip is a collaboration between Brian and Jeanee Linden of Linden Center in China and Dick and Norma Bell of Barnsite Gallery in Wisconsin. We will be traveling and painting in what some say is the most beautiful part of China, the Yunnan Province and settling in at the Linden Center in Dali, China. there will be many members of the Oil Painters of America on this trip. We will at times be painting right beside local Chinese artists and visiting some of China's leading artists studios.

Easton was so much fun. What a beautiful part of the country. The boats, the town, the farms. what variety. I did love painting in the local resturaunts the most. The painting below was done at a local bar "General Tanucki's" I hope to go back next year and paint the owner. I also did an exterior of the place for the quick draw competition, paint in 2 hours or less. Can't wait to get outside in Chicago more and paint more boats.

This little painting is kind of an unusual size. Perhaps 10 X16 or so. I ran out of canvas the other day but I like working on these unusual sizes. they stretch you on compositional ideas.

Time Managment

How do you do that????

I recently had a conversation with a fellow painter about time management.
As they say, there is never enough time in the day. This is something
I've struggled with for, well, I guess as long as I can remember. Itstuff
to schedule time for everything you need to do in a day, a week, a
month. I've never been very good at it. I myself seem to just go with
the flow and see where it takes me but I've known for a long time that
that simply Is not the way to get things done. Organization and
prioritizing I think is the key.

A balanced life is a successful life. (who said that?)

So here are my thoughts on this and practical actions I hope/plan to take in my life that perhaps will help you as well.

My Goal
1. Organize and plan the time spent in your studio. (see archived post on this subject)
2. schedule specific days to work on a) still life painting b) plein air painting and or finishing up a plein air painting in the studio and c) figure painting with a live model or finishing with a photo.
3. time to stretch canvases or make panels
4. time to work on the business side of your art, that is updating mailing list sending out newsletters, taking slides and digitals of your work.
5. time to enjoy. We all need time to relax and experience life. sometimes just being, stopping to smell the roses and being grateful for what we are able to do, that is to Paint.

Wow, Do I ever need to hear this. Hope my advise to myself helps you out too.

Note. I remember taking a workshop with Rose Frantzen and she said when she is painting she is also living. How true.

fast and if you don't stop and look around once in awhile you could

So I think by better planning you will be able to get more things done and have time to relax every once in awhile.

Here are a few quick sketches I did in class. The point was to capture the effect of light and abstract pattern of lights and darks. I also tried to get the gesture of the pose and not think too much about any real detail. there was not enough time. each pose was 25 min. Though I did get caught up in a bit of color changes I had a blast and can't wait to do this exercise again.

Painting in Multiple Sessions

Most of my paintings thus far have been done Alla Prima, that is, in one sitting. However, I've recently taking a few classes and spent time on my own working on a painting for more then one sitting. I've discovered a few things I thought I would share.

One, I've noticed that perhaps due to lack of practice on this, I found myself getting a bit paralyzed in my thinking. I find I paint differently when I know I have lots of time, I paint with thin tentative strokes rather then jumping right in with paint and letting it go. I know when your working in multiple sessions you would like to keep your paint thin in sections you know you will be reworking on a latter day but I don't believe Mancini or Fechin worked that way. However as I am barely scratching the surface on this one I will just leave it there.

Two, there is a point in the process the paint gets a bit tacky. It is not dry or wet but somewhere in between and let me tell you, that is the worst time to work on top of an area. Your best bet is to wait until it in completely dry to tackle that area.

Three, Its difficult to keep your focus for a long period of time. Trying to visualize the end result before you begin is going to take some time and lots of canvas.

Four, Discovering what finish is in a painting can be tricky. The paintings I do spend more then one sitting on tend to look rather tight, or maybe I mean refined. Whatever it is they are not often what I intend they look like in the end, hence the visualizing what you want your painting to look like in the end. Keeping your focus and if need be I guess find a way, a skill, a technique that will teach you how to make paintings you intend to make. Not paintings that just happen

So once again, back to the easel. One brush stroke at a time.

Painting Demo

Last Tuesday I gave a Still Life Demonstration up at the Glenview Art League. Given the Limited amount of time, it was a challenge to finish a painting and answer the viewers questions at the same time.

Because of this I thought I'd post the demo and talk a bit about what I was thinking during the process and to hopefully give more incite to those who attended and perhaps share new info to those who did not attend. This also gives me a chance to learn from my own experience as well.

I began the painting with a color wash. not necessarily in transparent washes though in parts they were used but also with a bit of thicker paint. My focus was in getting the abstract shapes down using color and value. I was not thinking about edges at this time only to keep everything soft in the beginning. I was anticipating sharpening edges up by carving things out using the background or adjacent shapes. * Note there are lots of ways to start a painting, given the time limitations and what I wanted to accomplish this seemed the best way to begin.

Once I got the initial abstract pattern in I began working on drawing, that is carving things out as a sculptor would, not using line to guide me but thinking of the shapes at they met each other. I also used some highlights ( the shapes of the highlights) to guide my drawing.

In this painting I started on the large pot because it was an easy shape that I knew I could get right as apposed to say the grapes or flowers that are far more difficult to see the overall shapes.

At this point as I was carving out the shape of the pot I thought about each edge of the pot as it met the cloth or grapes. I squinted down to see the relationship of the pot to the edges around it, and painted that relationships as I saw it at a squint.

I then moved to the grapes. As I had already done a color wash there was not much to do to make the initial wash begin to look like a cluster of grapes. The value and color were already there and rather then spending countless amounts of time "rendering" each grape, I only needed to pull out a few grapes causing the eye to read the abstract shape as a whole cluster.

To make some of the grapes pop out even more, I painted the shapes around them. The cloth and shadow pattern helped to define a few grapes and started to really read well at a distance.

As I moved along to the flowers, I noticed that in order for them to read well I had to paint the leaves and shadow pattern on the side of the pot to make the simple design of the flowers read accurately. I had mentioned several times during the demo that I was trying to paint these shapes simply, not getting wrapped up into what things are but painting only a few strokes and then letting your eye fill in the rest. Its amazing what your eye will interpret, I think because we are visual people, we see things everyday we know what things are, all our eye needs is a hint of what things are and our minds eye fills in the rest. Isn't that amazing.

If I were to continue on this painting a bit more I would still keep things simple. The little cup on the right perhaps a few more strokes in the light and maybe a few strokes along the edges of the shadow pattern.

That was it, I know it has helped me to write about the small demo and I hope you enjoyed it as well. I find repetition of information to be so helpful in getting it to stick in your brain.

After reading a bit about other artists doing these small "A Painting A Day" paintings I thought I'd give it a try. I guess you can say it is a new New Years Resolution. This one may be a bit harder to keep but its worth a shot.

My goal then is to do a painting a day, allowing at least one hour and no more then three on each little painting/study. This will all depend on the amount of time I can give per day. I have decided to allow myself at least one day off a week in anticipation of illness, business and the like. ( It seems i may have already proven this an impossible endeavor as I have taken a few days off already, yet I will continue to try my best.)

So I began this little experiment on January 1st, you can see a few paintings I have done so far and I will post each painting in my connected blog www.marcioleszkiewicz.blogspot.com. You can also click the link to the right titled Daily Paintings. So don't forget to check out the site to see a new painting hopefully every day. I actually went through with last years resolution, that was to draw more. I'm so excited because I have seen the improvement in not only my drawing skills but how it has helped my paintings as well.

Here are two drawings, one I did new years day of last year and one I did new years day of this year. I think I have learned so much and excited to see what this year will bring.

The drawing on the left is from last year. The drawing on the right was done this new years day. One step at a time. A thank you to those who have helped me this past year I am greatful for your generosity.

Ok so I am once again on my drawing kick. I keep finding myself a bit frustrated in my painting because my drawing is not where I feel it needs to be. Drawing is hard, I know, but I am convinced that it is the most important thing. hmm, well, ok so values, edges, color, composition, the feeling of the painting are all so important too. Perhaps it is a stronger drawing that I feel my paintings would most benefit from, and thus back to the drawing board.

I guess you are your worst critic. Though I have many things I wish to improve on, it is time now to go back to the basics, DRAWING.

I will post a few drawings as I go along this process.

Silent Art Auction Success

On August 25th, myself and a member of the Brookfield Landscape Society teamed up to showcase her newly landscaped garden and several of my paintings were available through a silent art auction.

The event went beautifully. The garden was decorated in simple elegance, live music provided by Liz Berg and guests had a chance to purchase original oils in the excitement of a silent auction. It was a successful night.

All who attended had a wonderful time and questions were made if this will be an annual event. We shall see. The event was also mentioned in The Landmark News, a local paper serving Brookfield and the surrounding areas.

OK I'm still here. Its been a while since I posted anything new because I was busy painting away in an intense five week workshop with Clayton J. Beck III. We just finished up the class this Friday. I'm always excited and glad to be able to work so intensely.

I've taken this class a few times and every time I find I learn so much and realize how much I enjoy being able to focus only on painting.

I wish I had the resources to do just that, paint. I guess my time will come.

There are all these ideas floating around in my head I can't wait to experiment with. I'll post new paintings soon.

Saturday's Painting

Here is a small painting I did last saturday with The Plein Air Painter's of Chicago. We went out to the Grove in Glenview. What a charming place. I know it has to be just beautiful in the fall and spring. This time of year I found it tuff to find a spot to paint because there was just so much green. So I will do few minor touches to my little piece but all in all I am happy with it.

Blank Canvas AHH

This morning I went into my studio planning on getting some good painting done, and what did I do, I stared at that blank canvas and just sat there. I even set up a pretty nice still life but was just uninspired. I blame it on the weather. I don't know about others but for me, when its so cloudy and grey outside I sometimes don't feel like doing anything. Perhaps I should have taken my plein air easel out and painting that cloudy day. I wanted to be productive so I began stretching a few of my paintings. I stretched the ones I knew were successful as well as a few blank canvases just so I would not have any excuses the next time I came into the studio.

I'm beginning to really see the need to be prepared. I don't like coming into the studio and finding I have a certain amount of time to work only to get nothing done because I was not prepared. When I say prepared I mean, do I have all my materials at hand, do I have my studio clean to work, do I need to buy fresh flowers or fruit to be inspired to paint? I found I get the most done when I have an idea of what I'm going to do. I get inspired when I know I will have three hours to paint and I just went to the store and bought a new tea cup or fresh flowers.

Yeh I'm getting excited to paint already.

Romel dela Torre's Workshop

I just finished up a workshop with Romel dela Torre. It was a workshop on painting the model outdoors as well as learning to paint from photos.

The first weekend we painted from the model and took photos. The following day we worked from the sketches we had done the previous day as well as using our photos as a reference. Good stuff.

This weekend Romel did two outstanding demos and we all got to paint from life both days. On Saturday we were supposed to think abstract and use lots of paint. That was a tuff one for me. When I think I'm using a lot of paint I see later it was really nothing. Sunday everyone painted in the way they preferred. I tried to stay with abstract and capturing the light. Romel came over in the last 10 minutes, added those abstract shapes and color notes to make the painting sing. Ugh, how does he do that, I don't know but will work hard to find out and apply it.

I think however, that each new painting I do becomes more exciting as I place these new ideas and skills into practice.

Painting is such hard work but great fun.

Painting with My Brother

I visited my brother and his family over the holiday weekend. It was nice to have a break from painting for a little while. Not for too long though. On Saturday I painted in the morning and drove up to his house. After we all went to see a movie and relaxed a bit My brother took the pool out for the little kids to cool off. I was so itching to paint so I grabbed my paints and set up to paint the kids playing in the pool.

My brother saw my set up and hinted at wanting to paint. I told him I had an extra set up and to join me. He was a bit nervous because he had not painted in a long time. I encouraged him and we went to work.

It was so nice to be painting with him again. We used to take classes together at Marwen and worked at Gallery 37 together as well, way back when.

We only had a short while to paint. It began to rain after a while and with three kids running around we both only painted his little girl and as you know they don't stand still. My little nephew kept coming over to see what we were doing and asked if he could help, as well as offered some incredible encouragement "Dad you're doing a great job." and "Cio Cia (thats Polish for Aunt) Marci yours is very nice too."

It was a cherished moment.

Model Marathon

On Memorial Day The Palette & Chisel had its usual Drawing Marathon. 7:00 am to 7:00pm, no stopping, one model after another. I think the temperature reached over 90 and let me tell you, it was HOT. You didn't have to do anything and you were dripping with sweat. It was fun but exhausting. I felt like I was at one of those dance marathons like from that movie"They Shoot Horses Don't They" where you can't stop dancing or you're out of the competition and you lose (I know it was a depressing movie). I guess I lost because I quit at 4:15 and went in my air conditioned studio to finish up a painting. I'd have to pat myself on the back though because I was there at 7:00am pencils sharpened and ready to go.

I'll post a couple of drawings I did during the day, The ones I did before my brain overheated and I ran to the air conditioning.

Barns & Farms Exhibition

My Painting Entitled "Anya's Little Farm" was excepted into the Barns & Farms Show at the Barnsite Art Studio & Gallery in Kewaunee Wisconsin. The opening is on June 10th. Kewaunee is only 4 hours away from Chicago and 15 - 20 min from Door County. Feel like taking a weekend vacation up there stop by and visit the Gallery. I also have several other pieces up there as well.

Society of Master Impressionists

More good news. Two new paintings entitled "Figure on White" and "Natanya's Dress" were accepted into the Society of Master Impressionists Inaugural National Juried Exhibition. The show will be held at The Sunset Art Gallery in Amarillo, Texas. Opening night is on Friday June 2nd 7 - 10 pm and will run through July 1, 2006.

HOPE Egg-Stravaganza, Northwestern Memorial Foundation

Municipal Art League of Chicago Juried Show

This painting was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Reception on May 13th.

My painting entitled "Jessica" will be on exhibit at the Beverly Arts Center for the Municipal Art League of Chicago's Juried Show. This show will run from May 13th to June 10th, 2006. The openning reception is scheduled for May 13th, from 6 -9 pm at 2407 W. 111th St. in Chicago.

A New Still Life

My most recent still life. Because this past month was mainly devoted to the business side of art, I was not painting as much as I normally do and let me tell you, its not easy getting back into it. You loose momentum and it just does not feel good. I know the business side needs to be worked on but I will try my hardest not to let more then a few days go by without painting.

I just bought this little tea cup a few days ago and I was really excited about painting it. I hadn't intended on painting a finished piece only because I felt the need to warm up a bit, but as I was painting things started to fall into place and I watched as the painting came alive. I think it reads well and I was happy with it.

The Plein air Painters of Chicago

The Plein air Painters of Chicago will be having their 2nd annual group exhibition this Friday night at the Palette & Chisel (1012 N. Dearborn) from 5:00 - 9:30pm.

Last years show was fantastic and this year proves to be the same with many more wonderful paintings of your favorite landmarks of Chicago as well as some new views of the more intimate neighborhoods in Chicago.

Here is a painting I did in early december. It started out with a little bit of line work but mostly coming in with masses. My goal was to get the color and temperature right. I really wanted to show the strength of the spot light. That was what really stood out to me on that particular day.

Drawing, Drawing and more Drawing!

I'm so excited about drawing. I used to be so intimidated by it, not that I am not continually humbled by drawings I see that are far more advanced then mine, but it used to really make me nervous. You know the feeling, whose watching me, will I make a fool of myself, just hoping your figure looks human, turning your page around on break so no one would see. Now I will admit I still turn the page around at times but its not so that others will not see my horribly failed attempt but rather to clear my head and just let that one go, ridding my thoughts of negative frustration so that I can move on and try again.

Another thing that brought all that anxiety when attempting to draw the figure was the fact that I simply was ignorant to what was going on up there. I know the same is true when drawing anything else, not limited to the figure, at least when drawing is applied to construction, perspective and such, not just contour work. So, thanks to the encouragement and instruction from a few friends and Instructor, a little push in the right direction and I am beginning to understand a little bit more. It has freed me from some of that anxiety and frustration. Believe me I am not there yet but I know things are beginning to make a lot more sense and its so exciting to make these discoveries and see progress.

New Sketch Book

Here are a couple of pages from my new sketch book. I've been doing a bit of quick drawings, not more then a couple of minutes each, while waiting on the el platform or sitting on the train going home. I'm having a lot of fun with this. You have to position yourself just right to have enough angles to draw from. Sometimes your out of luck all together because everybody's back is towards you and its no fun drawing a blob of winter coat. I plan to fill this sketch book with many drawings and hopefully be able to see my growth within its pages.

Reflection

Why do I Paint? I came across an old sketch book of mine the other day. I started flipping through the pages, curious to see if I had in fact progressed in my drawing skills after a few years. There were a couple of drawings I was quite impressed with, considering how long ago they were done, and others, well lets just say they were "nice" if you know what I mean.

Amongst the sketches were a few notes to myself. Several quick little phrases and some lengthy entries of inner thoughts and reflection. Reading over these notes triggered something in me that I may have lost over some time. I paint because I have to, it is in me. Life is too beautiful to let it slip by without even noticing. I was given this gift, this sensitivity to life and its my job to take what was given and invest, cause it to grow.

At the time I had written one of my little entries, I was sitting on a bed of rocks on the shore of a little island off the coast of Maine. No one was on this island but a small group of students and the owner of the island. I began to take in the beauty of such a place, the awesome peacefulness, the tranquility of creation. As my eyes wondered around the panoramic view of ocean and sky, as the crisp, clean scent known only to this little island began to embrace my senses I started to write. My words expressed my awe in this creation and praise to The Creator of life. I was so thankful to be blessed to see this world in a unique way. It is an honor to me to be able to paint, to explore the world around me in its intricate detail and vast wonder. To God be the Glory.

New years resolutions anyone?

Although I'm not one to make resolutions, this year I decided it would be a year to really developing my drawing skills. I know I will still paint but realized that my drawing skills are so important. As many instructors have said and I totally agree, You can have all the paint on your canvas, thin and thick strokes, lots of color and temperature, but if the drawing is off all the paint in the world can't save it. So here begins my journey of strengthening my drawing skills.

This drawing was done in paint. Learning to draw with a pencil is one thing, drawing with a paint brush it quite another.

Quick Hand Studies

I've been painting a bit of quick hand studies, only 25minute poses. So often I paint head studies and figures but never seem to have enough time to get to the hands. I guess I'm also sort of preparing for a workshop this January with Clayton J. Beck III at the Palette & Chisel. Its given me incentive to really understand the shapes and characteristics of the hand.

My friend David and I have been hiring models to sit for us, just to study the hand. Anyway I still have a ways to go, but its a start.

Saturday's Painting

Here is the painting I did last Saturday.
It was very cold. I lasted about 2 hours or so and then I had to call it a day.
This is a very small painting about 4x8. I was glad to have a small canvas with me, I had a late start and it was just so cold.

Next time I'll bring a few more heating pads with me. It was fun though.

Painting the Still Life

I have recently begun painting still lifes again. I had forgotten how wonderful they are to paint. They don't need a break as a model does, The light doesn't change when using a spot light, and If you are one to spend lots of time on a painting, you don't have to pay them an hourly fee. One caution though, just because you can take a long time to paint a still life does not mean it would be the best option. There is such a thing as over working a painting. You have to know when to stop, when enough is enough. I found that as long as I can stay focused on my original idea I'm ok to continue, but after a few hours when I begin to lose focus, I know I'm approaching that time to stop, start a new painting or call it a day. It is a good idea to take breaks though even when your subjects do not need one. Just as if you were painting a model and needed to give them a break, You need a break too. Set a timer and when it goes off, stop what your doing, step back and maybe even leave the room. At times I've found myself staring at my painting close up, As if it would magically fix itself. I'd forget to take a break and step back. You want to be able to look at your painting with fresh eyes. Sometimes it's more beneficial to just put your brushes down, squint down and look at your subject (not your painting) and study it. What values are you seeing, what kind of edges are you seeing, What shapes are you seeing? Then look at your painting and see if you are capturing all that you see when you look up at your subject. I know its hard and exhausting to stay so focused, but as you begin to train yourself you will be able to stay focused for longer amounts of time. In the end its all worth it.

The Tavern Club on Michigan and Wacker. This show entitled "What Exactly is Plein Air Painting?" is sponsored by the Plein Air Painters of Chicago- South West. This is a group I paint with on occasion and will have a few paintings on display.

The opening reception is on Friday November 11th from 5:30 - 7:30pm. There will be wine and cheese and a jazz guitarist. The show will run through January 1, 2006.

2nd Location

Marwen on Orleans and Institute place, one block north of Chicago. This show is Marwen's Annual Alumni Show. There will be a variety of works, from installations to oil paintings. Marwen is a not- for-profit organization which offers free art classes to under served youth. I will have a few paintings on display.

The opening reception is on Friday November 11th from 5:00 - 8:00pm. There will be wine and cheese as well as music by Madrid. The show runs through December 7th, 2005.

This past Saturday was the Oil Painters of America's National Paint Out in Illinois. There had to have been at least 30 painters participating. We painted at Elawa Farm in Lake Forest. It was so much fun seeing old friends and meeting new artist from all over the area. There was a bit of rain throughout the day but not enough to keep us away from gathering together as fellow painters, excited to capture, if only a taste of this beautiful world we live in. After the Paint Out we gathered at Diane Rath’s house/studio for lunch, camp fire and viewing of the morning paintings. I’d have to say it was quite a treat; this is the artist’s life. We are so lucky, so blessed to be given such a gift. It’s wonderful to be pursuing your passion, and then to hang out, chat, share new ideas and revelations with the many others who share that same passion.

This is the painting I did during the Paint Out. Other painters were scattered up and down the small path, painting away. I'm so thankful to Denny for hooking me up with an attachment for my umbrella, I used it the whole time.

A Thought on Fear

Why does fear always get in the way of things? We're all the same when it comes to learning something new. I remember one of the first painting classes I had, I was so nervous. Was my painting going to look as good as the person’s next to me? Erasing, scraping away a stroke I just put down, afraid someone might see my terrible mistake before it was too late.
Fear paralyzes us. It keeps us from becoming who we're meant to be, but what do we have to be afraid of? The classroom/studio is our laboratory; we’re allowed to make mistakes. You have to be able to let it go, that your painting might not be as good as those next to you that your portrait doesn’t quite look like a person. You have to let these things go so you can learn. Allow yourself to make mistakes; it’s the only way you’ll grow. No one is perfect. Don’t put that kind of stress on yourself, As Scott Tallman would say "No Worries". Imagine what we’re all capable of if we just didn’t care what other people thought. A lesson I need to remind myself of all the time.

Painting in Wisconsin

So we arrived in scenic Kewaunee Wisconsin on Thursday evening. The ride up was not bad, but we were happy to check into our rooms and settle in. The weekend started with an early morning model session indoors. I had forgotten how confusing some light sources can be and struggled a bit determining the temperature of the light. After lunch we ventured outdoors to paint the boats in the harbors of Lake Michigan. Everything was so beautiful. The wind was fierce but we anchored ourselves down (literally, one of the fisherman borrowed me an anchor to keep my easel stable) and began to paint. I decided on a 6x8 canvas thinking with the insane gusts of wind I would have much more success tackling a smaller canvas. The fishermen came by every so often as they were just hanging out unable to take their boats out due to the heavy winds. As I was further along in my painting one man came up to me and took a look, He said he was hoping I had chosen to paint his boat as he would have purchased it, I guess the owner of my boat had decided to stay indoors that afternoon. After packing up for dinner we drove around the town a bit scouting out locations for the following morning, How do you pick a spot when everything around you is so quaint and picturesque? After dinner we gathered up our energy for one more model session. I was lucky enough to paint next to Ken Dewaard, A wonderful painter and instructor at the Barnsite Academy. We were very fortunate to have had him there during our retreat. He and Aaron Holland ( another instructor at the academy) were gracious enough to stay late on Saturday to do a critique of our work done during the weekend. They did a wonderful job, all who participated learned so much. On Saturday morning we painted out on the beach, the weather was just perfect and the seagulls sang there song of calm restfulness. In the afternoon, we brought a costumed model outside to try and capture the dappled sunlight on a figure seated under a tree. I decided this venture may be better left to tackle in the not so near future, after many more miles of canvas are covered plein air painting minus the model. The sun light moving so fast, reflected light bouncing everywhere, getting the drawing right, I guess was a little much or perhaps I just expected too much out of myself. So I closed down early and found a simpler scene. I put my head phones on and tried to focus once more. Though I only had an hour more before our critique, I was happy to start anew and was re-energized. After the critique we enjoyed a wonderful dinner together and chatted. Sunday morning, our last day in Kewaunee and one last painting before heading back to Chicago. The fall leaves were changing and we decided to capture a bit of the season in this quaint little town. Susan and I had parked ourselves on the side of the road just near a small wood. As we began to set up we heard a sudden noise from the woods that sounded like an angry animal screaming. We were startled and jumped back from our easels. What was it? It was so loud and would not stop. We looked up in the tree and saw two animals looking down at us. I thought they were monkeys at first because of there stripped tails but was highly unlikely. It happened they were two wild cats fighting over territories. We were a little shaken up but they soon calmed down and we were able to paint. I would say the weather was the most beautiful this day and was a perfect close to a weekend of painting. If only every day was full of that much painting, soon I hope.

PLEIN AIR RETREAT

The Palette & Chisel, together with the Barnsite Art Studio will be having a painters retreat up in Wisconsin. Three Days of Plein air painting or painting from the model. I attended the summer retreat and it was so relaxing and fun. We painted Marsh Lands, A Country Farm, A Vitorian Garden, and one morning took the Model outdoors to paint (see photo). This time of year should so be beautful as well.

Painting the Portait Under Artificial Light.

Lets face it, not many of us have the luxury of painting under cool north light all the time. So how can we make the warm, powerful presence of artificial light work for us? In this workshop we will explore those characteristics. Through small quick studies, by simplifying shapes, values and color you will begin to understand the character of the light and then move into larger, longer studies with a new visual awareness of this light.
